New Member: John Quirke, Watchmaker & Jeweller Castle Street, Cahir, Co. Tipperary

John Quirke originally began his business career with Brian Purcell Jewellers in Clonmel and upon serving his time, established his own business in 1976 beside the Post Office in Cahir. John came from a family steeped in sporting tradition, having played hurling, football, soccer, squash & badminton, as well as running cross country. As a result, he was deeply interested interest in sports trophies and sporting awards.
In 1991 John made his move to 14 Castle Street in Cahir where his business is still situated today. This move was due to his business expanding and the need for more space. The official opening of that store was carried out by Declan Carr, All Ireland winning Tipperary captain.
Having found that their factory outlet needed a permanent presence in the area, Tipperary Crystal appointed John as their first off-site retailer and he was also was the first in the region to have computerized engraving.  Due to high demand for his products, a second engraving machine has since been added.
Originally running the shop himself, John now employs two fulltime staff along with a number of part time staff.  To complement the more traditional trophy craft business, he has in recent years expanded into giftware, repairs and crystal.  John has always found himself at the heart of sporting and other various local communities,  and has sponsored numerous events in the locality since the business began. 
Among the many events to which he has contributed are:

• South Senior Hurling + other hurling man of match awards.
• Man of the match awards for the past 25 years unbroken.
• South Junior Championship hurling.
• Juvenile competitions South + West.
• T.S.D.L soccer League 1st division Youth League.
• Tipperary Cup finals Man of the match awards.
• Winter league in Cahir Park Golf Club.

John through his business and personal interests has been heavily involved in community projects such as:

• Cahir Town Council.
• Cahir Tidy Towns.
• Fair of Cahir committee.
• Cahir Community Bingo.
• Cahir Development USS-founding member.
• Founding member of Cahir – Scarborough twinning group.
• Cahir Enterprise Centre.
• The Granary.
• Cahir Community Hall project.

One particular project close to his heart  is the work involved in  saving and restoring Cahir Community Library clock.
