Gravedigging, Shoring & Burial

Gravedigging is a critical and sensitive task that plays a crucial role in the funeral industry and cemetery management. The trade is an overlooked but vital aspect of the funeral industry.
This course will add to the knowledge and skills already held by the candidates but is also designed to be delivered to somebody just entering the funeral industry.
It will provide a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles, techniques, and considerations involved in the practice of gravedigging.
The course will equip the candidate with the knowledge and skills necessary to approach gravedigging safely, shoring the grave safely, handling of remains respectfully, and with dignity.
Course Objectives
- Understand the historical and cultural significance of burial practices
- Learn the importance of respect, ethics, and professionalism when handling human remains.
- Recognise cultural and religious diversity in funeral and burial practices
- Learn soil composition and excavation principles.
- Consider environmental and sustainability factors in burial practices.
- Develop an understanding of cemetery maintenance.
- Gain expertise in safe and effective grave excavation techniques.
- Discover the different shoring systems and their significance in preventing cave-ins.
- Discover funeral methods and traditions.
- Discover gravediggers’ role in aiding mourning families and funeral services.
- Study Health & Safety policies and best practices tailored and specific to the sensitive cemetery environment.
- Recognise the importance of SSWP.

Please note that all courses will be conducted contingent upon funding being received and achieving a sufficient number of enrolled learners. If the minimum enrolment threshold is not met, the course may be postponed or cancelled. Enrolled learners will be notified of any changes in a timely manner.
Training Cancellation Policy
Training courses which are cancelled over 7 days in advance of scheduled training date shall incur no cancellation fee. Training courses which are cancelled within 7 days of scheduled training date shall incur a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the cost. Registrants who give less than 24 hours notice or fail to attend training will be charged 100% of the full fee.
