TIME AND LOCATON DETAILS BELOW SUBJECT TO CHANGE BY MUNSTER BOVINE

This is a 4-day course.

Monday – theory/practical Session (10:30 am to 4pm) in Munster Bovine, Mallow.

Tuesday, Wednesday ,Thursday – (10:30am to 1:30pm) – On-farm practical Sessions in Dromcollogher Area.

NOTE LOCATION CHANGE HALFWAY THROUGH THURSDAY!

Thursday – theory/practical Session (2pm -4pm) in Munster Bovine, Mallow – (lunch included on Monday and Thursday) in Munster Bovine.

Programme Content:

Day 1 Theory

  • Anatomy of bovine reproductive tract.
  • Oestrus cycle and reproductive physiology.
  • Collection and handling of frozen semen.
  • Using equipment – flasks, thawing units, guns, sheaths etc
  • Demonstration and practice of using equipment including thawing straws and loading AI guns.
  • Reproductive tracts from abattoir – anatomy and practicing AI technique.
  • Animal behaviour and handling – Health and safety.

Day 2, 3 and 4 Practical

  • Expert tuition from experienced technicians and veterinary supervisor.
  • 50 different cows available per session. We are very conscious of the welfare of the cows presented for training. We insist that no cow is used twice for training purposes.
  • Students get huge opportunity to practice AI technique under expert guidance.

Day 4 Theory

  • Planning the breeding season.
  • Herd Health, nutrition and production diseases.
  • Heat detection and synchronisation.
  • Dairy and beef genetics.
  • The importance of hygiene.
  • Biosecurity
  • Monitoring performance and managing risk when starting DIY at home.
  • Legislation

Certification:

DAFM approved Munster Bovine certificate.

Please note that all courses will be conducted contingent upon funding being received and achieving a sufficient number of enrolled learners. If the minimum enrolment threshold is not met, the course may be postponed or cancelled. Enrolled learners will be notified of any changes in a timely manner.

Training Cancellation Policy

Training courses which are cancelled over 7 days in advance of scheduled training date shall incur no cancellation fee. Training courses which are cancelled within 7 days of scheduled training date shall incur a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the cost. Registrants who give less than 24 hours notice or fail to attend training will be charged 100% of the full fee.
