Learner Profile

Participants will typically be either company employees or members of the public with an interest in Manual Handling Training and in the development of Instructor skills in this important workplace area. The programme will have a 5 day duration and will focus on practical aspects of Manual Handling in the Workplace, Risk Assessment for Manual Handling Tasks and the Development of Essential Trainer Skills. It is likely that a successful participant will be required by their company to deliver staff training in this discipline, following the programme. The programme will be highly interactive and practical in nature and will demand a high level of learner participation and engagement at all stages.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Participants will be over 18 years of age prior to course commencement date.
  • Participants will require a good level of English, both oral and written. The minimum standard required of personnel for whom English may not be their first language is set at level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Evidence of competence and certification to this standard will be demonstrated by means the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
  • There is currently no specific requirement for participants to have completed a previous programme of training at a similar or lower level on the NFQ.
  • Participants will require a reasonable level of physical fitness so that practical elements of the programme, including assessment elements, can be undertaken successfully.

Assessment

Participants, as part of programme assessment, will be required to demonstrate good practical manual handling skills. Participants will also be required to instruct and assess other learners in correct manual handling techniques in a simulated workplace setting.

Participants will further be required to present a selected theoretical module from the Anderlift Safety Services Manual Handling Training Presentation.

The assessment presentation to be delivered will be 15 minutes in duration approximately and will focus on one of the following components:

  • Introduction to Manual Handling and Legal Overview
  • Risk Assessment for Manual Handling
  • Anatomy of the Spine and Injury Potential
  • Fitness, Flexibility and Posture Issues
  • Key Ergonomic Principles
  • The Key Points of Safe Lifting using the ground level lift as an example

There will also be a short written test of knowledge as well as a requirement for participants to complete a work-based Manual Handling Risk Assessment Assignment based on a specific assignment brief and using approved templates that will be provided.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme Learners will:

  • Understand the key Legal requirements relating to Manual Handling of Loads in the Workplace.
  • Be able to effectively deliver a Practical Manual Handling lesson – covering Theoretical and Practical elements, using the Anderlift Manual Handling Presentation.
  • Understand the basic Anatomy of the Spine, Work Physiology, Fitness and Flexibility, Biomechanics and the nature of back and other musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Understand and be able to demonstrate a range of Instructional Skills based on Adults learning concepts and principles.
  • Be able to demonstrate and explain the Practical Lifting and moving of loads at different levels – as well as analysing participant performance of specific lifts.
  • Be able to effectively use approved Risk Assessment templates to assess and record potential risks associated with workplace manual handling activity.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

LEGAL ASPECTS OF MANUAL HANDLING

  • General Application Regulations (Manual Handling)
  • Statutory and Common Law
  • Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005
  • Manual Handling – General Application Regulations 2007 to 2020 (Part 2 Chapter 4)
  • Duty to avoid manual handling where possible
  • Risk reduction and assessment when Manual Handling is unavoidable
  • The duty to provide training and information to employees

PRACTICAL MANUAL HANDLING SESSION – Conducted by Course Instructor

Day 2 (AM)

(Chartered Physiotherapist)

ANATOMY

  • Structure and functions of the spine
  • How different postures can adversely affect the spine
  • A holistic approach to fitness for tasks and reduction of injury

WORK PHYSIOLOGY

  • How various parts of the human body function when lifting, pushing and pulling
  • the energy required to complete certain tasks
  • the effects on the body of carrying out routine and repetitive tasks

FITNESS AND FLEXIBILITY

  • Flexibility as a basic requirement in the prevention of injury
  • Physical Capability
  • A self-help programme for improved strength, endurance and flexibility.

P.M. Practical Manual Handling Session

Practical Lifting of Loads by participants at different levels. Analysis of participant performance and perfecting of good manual handling practice will be the primary focus. (Instructor led session).

DAY 3 (AM)

INSTRUCTIONAL SKILLS

  • Methods of Learning- Adult Learning Principles
  • Trainer Values and Skills
  • Structure of an effective training module
  • Use of Aims, Objectives and other Strategies to motivate personnel and change working practices
  • Use of learning aids and other support materials
  • Review of topics for short presentation on Day 4

PRACTICAL - DEALING WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOADS- Participant Led training session on designated lifts.

  • Lifting from ground level
  • Lifting from bench level
  • Lifting from bench level to height
  • Pushing and pulling of loads
  • Team Lifting

Day 4 (AM)

PRESENTATION BY EACH PARTICIPANT ON PREPARED TOPICS

  • Each student will deliver a short presentation on an agreed/prepared topic
  • The tutor will then give an assessment on each of the presentations, detailing strengths and suggesting potential improvements.
  • Practical Manual Handling Session - All designated lifts - Student led.

Day 5

EXAMINATION/Assessment

Assessment/Assignment/Presentation Brief

Participants will be assessed by means of the following methods:

Presentation (Skills Demonstrations in Presentation Delivery and Practical area) – 60%

Written Examination – 20%

Post Course Risk Assessment Assignment (Project) – 20%

Certification: Successful Candidates will receive the QQI Level 6 Award through the normal QQI submission process, subject to external authentication.

Support for Learners: Anderlift staff will provide a high level of course mentoring to interested candidates and will provide specific guidance in relation to the assessment process.

All participants will be issued with a comprehensive Learner Handbook on commencement of each programme.

Please note that all courses will be conducted contingent upon funding being received and achieving a sufficient number of enrolled learners. If the minimum enrolment threshold is not met, the course may be postponed or cancelled. Enrolled learners will be notified of any changes in a timely manner.


Training Cancellation Policy

Training courses which are cancelled over 7 days in advance of scheduled training date shall incur no cancellation fee. Training courses which are cancelled within 7 days of scheduled training date shall incur a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the cost. Registrants who give less than 24 hours notice or fail to attend training will be charged 100% of the full fee.
